The very first thing that the power of God is designed to do in your life is change you. His highest goal is to change performance, mainly our inner man. The Spirit of God is in the business of internal restoration.
Joseph had to learn to win within himself. During Joseph’s journey he is placed as a slave in the house of Potiphar where he is gaining leadership. He is soon tested in his leadership when he is tempted by Potiphar’s wife to have sex, and of course this is no small test! Joseph was being test internally. This test would determine whether or not he could trust himself. Joseph resisted giving honor and respect to Potiphar, to God, and to himself. Self-leadership always precedes leading others.
The first base is all about character and God’s desire to reshape you and I into His image. The book of James tells us why there are so many breakdowns in people’s lives, it is because of the war that is inside all of us. We have unresolved desires, unknown motives, and deep self-deception.
As I get more and more honest about the inner struggles of my life, and sense the presence of the spirit invading me, that presence is standing ready to remove, cleanse, and renew my heart and purpose. Then, I can claim first base and move on.
If you can’t lead yourself, you will never be able to lead others.
